Hong Kong Employment Support Scheme

Hong Kong employers can now request financial aid to retain employees who may otherwise be made redundant - the first tranche of this new subsidy can be applied for until 14 June 2020.
27th May, 2020

The HKSAR Government's Employment Support Scheme (ESS) is part of its anti-epidemic fund and those making an application must provide an undertaking not to make redundancies while they receive the subsidy and to spend the money on paying wages to their regular employees.

The government will provide the wage support to eligible employers for six months. The first tranche of aid will cover the period from June to August 2020, while the second tranche will cover September to November 2020. The amount will be calculated on 50 per cent of the actual wages paid to each employee in a specified month. The maximum wage subsidy per employee is HKD$9,000 per month.

Applications can be made online and it is expected most employers will receive the money three to four weeks after application.
